Enemy Ghosts

So these guys are the designs for the main enemies of our Group Project game. The Brief was to design a game using the Learn, Practice, Master Loop, by designing a game that led to a Boss Battle.

There’s many reasons behind the designs. A lot resemble humans, because I find humans can be very scary, especially if they are de-anthropomorphised. Think, Silent Hill enemies. A few were taken from drawing the human figure from reference. The more extreme the pose, the creepier they appeared.

My tutor said once that “creepiness is the ambiguity of threat” Something with sharp teeth, and evil eyes is going to scare some people, but ultimately, you know that its going to kill you. Its dangerous. If something is ambiguous about its threat, you don’t know if its dangerous or not…all you know is its unsettling.

There are also designs with backstories involved, such as the broom wielding ghost being a cleaner in his past life. A mustachioed, Freddy Mercury ghost. Ghosts that resemble scarecrows, made of burlap, and thick stitching. Trying to evoke that unsettling feeling from wounds, or damaged dolls and teddy bears.
